CCL Preview: Atlanta United just 'a little bit thin' for trip to San Pedro Sula

Atlanta United begins its second Concacaf Champions League campaign on Tuesday on the road against Honduran club Motagua.

It should be able to handle El Ciclon Azul in the first-round matchup that begins in San Pedro Sula but will be dangerously short-handed in the back and midfield for different reasons.

CCL Outlook. Injuries are the problem in the back, where Miles Robinson is out for at least the first leg with a quad strain suffered in the first half of the first preseason match at Mexico's Leones Negros. Already missing with injuries are left backs Edgar Castillo and George Bello.

The problem in midfield is that newcomers Jake Mulraney, Matheus Rossetto and Manuel Castro don't have work visas.

"That makes it a little bit thin for me,” said de Boer, who will have as few as 14 field players available on Tuesday.

One of them is Homegrown signing George Campbell, who has looked promising in the back, but de Boer is unlikely to throw him into the fray at the Estadio Olimpico Metropoliano, one of the most difficult venues in Concacaf for visiting teams.
