CCL Recap: Short-handed Atlanta United opens with 1-1 draw in Honduras

Short-handed Atlanta United got out of San Pedro Sula with a 1-1 draw against Honduran club Motagua in the first leg of the round of 16 in the Concacaf Champions League.

Motagua scored the opening goal in the 34th minute, but Atlanta United responded one minute later when Josef Martinez scored after teaming up with Pity Martinez. Keeper Brad Guzan made five saves in the second half to preserve the tie.

Because of injuries and visa issues, Atlanta United only had five field players on the bench, one of them Phillip Goodrum, a forward out of UNC Wilmington taken with the No. 75 overall pick in the 2020 SuperDraft and signed on Tuesday to a four-day contract.
