Both U.S. U-16 national teams fall to Spanish teams, 2-1, in England

Both the U.S. U-16 boys and U-16 girls lost to their Spanish counterparts, 2-1, on the opening day of the UEFA Development Tournament in Burton upon Trent, England.

For the boys, the tournament is the first of the 2020-21 cycle leading up to the 2021 U-17 World Cup. They led on a goal by Samuel Jones (Philadelphia Union) until the Spanish rallied, winning on a goal in stoppage time. The U.S boys play host England on Friday and Denmark on Monday.

Tyler Isgrig (Solar SC) scored the lone goal for the U.S. U-16 girls against Spain, which opened up a two-goal lead in the first half. The U.S. girls have the same schedule as the boys: host England on Friday and Denmark on Monday.

All the matches will be played at England’s national training center at St. George's Park, located about 145 miles north of London. As part of the UEFA Development Tournament, each player on the roster is required to play at least 90 minutes over the three matches.

U.S. U-16 boys:
Spain 2 USA 1. Goals: Alarcon 62, Gismera 90+2; Jones 20.
USA -- Slonina, Tanton, Wiley, Leone, Booth, Toure, Valdez (Rotundo 72), Oliva (Alvarez (83), Yohannes (Ayala 45),  Jones (Williams 57), Auvray (Yapi 45).

U.S. U-16 girls:
Spain 2 USA 1. Goals: Bartel 10, Lloris 37; Isgrig 87.
USA -- Flammia, Taitano, Minestrella, Dellarose, Rader (Isgrig 72), Evans, Reason, Cook (Lemos 72), McCormack (Marcisz 72), Thompson (Cheesman 64), Uribe (Montoya 64).
