CCL Recap: Heber hat trick powers NYCFC to 5-3 victory in Costa Rica

Of the five MLS teams in this year's Concacaf Champions League, only New York City FC won its opener on the road, picking up a rare MLS win on Costa Rican soil when it defeated San Carlos, 5-3, in Alajuela.

It was a battle of Concacaf Champions League newcomers, and NYCFC came out on top thanks to a hat trick by Brazilian Heber.

NYCFC led 2-0 and 4-1 but ran into trouble like so many other MLS teams did late in their CCL openers. Los Toros del Norte came back to make it 4-3 and were looking for the equalizer when NYCFC was awarded a penalty kick in stoppage time.

Maxi Moralez missed the penalty kick, but Alexandru Mitrita scored on the rebound and made the final score 5-3.
