Xavier Kouassi among nine players released by Swiss club FC Sion

Former New England Revolution midfielder Xavier Kouassi was among nine players who had their contracts terminated by Swiss club FC Sion.

The players had rejected the struggling club's request to go on unemployment through April 30 while the Super League is postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Kouassi has spent eight seasons at Sion with a two-year break to play for the Revs. The first season ended before it began because of a knee injury.

Other players dropped included Cameroonian Alex Song and Swiss international Johan Djourou, who both played for Arsenal.

Sion is eighth in the 10-team Super League with 13 games to play.
