Former Real Madrid president Lorenzo Sanz dies after suffering from the coronavirus

Lorenzo Sanz, who was president of Real Madrid when it won the 1998 Champions League to end a 32-year drought, died at the age of 76 after suffering from the coronavirus.

Sanz, who had a respiratory disease, had been hospitalized on Tuesday.

Sanz was the Real Madrid president for six years (1995-2000). It won the first five European Cups and a sixth in 1966 but it did not win again until 1998 when it captured the UEFA Champions League with a 1-0 win over Juventus.

It won a second Champions League title under Sanz in 2000 and the 1997 La Liga crown.

“My father has just passed away," Lorenzo Sanz Jr. said on Twitter. "He didn’t deserve it to end this way. One of the most brave and hard-working people who I have known in my life has left us."
