What They're Saying: Derek Merrin

“It is not a question of whether these projects are worthy. It is a question of priorities. As times change so should our priorities. We do not know what the future holds.”

-- Representative Derek Merrin, a Republican from the Toledo and sponsor of the Ohio House version of the state capital budget reappropriation bill that would slice about $584 million from the $1.3 billion proposal in the Ohio Senate, including the $20 million state share of the Columbus Crew's new downtown stadium and $4 million for FC Cincinnati’s West End stadium project. In removing projects for universities and colleges and sports and cultural facilities to deal with the economic fallout from the COVID-19 lockdown, Merrim said the bill supports “projects that directly impact the health and safety of Ohioans." Those seeking funding will have an opportunity to present their case why their projects shouldn't be trimmed from the budget. (Columbus Dispatch)
