Portugal: Benfica team bus stoned by fans after first game back

Inside Estadio da Luz on Thursday, the only evidence of support for Benfica was thousands of scarves placed on seats to represent fans.

But outside the famed Lisbon stadium, fans left their mark, stoning the team bus after a disappointing 0-0 with Tondela in their first game back following the restart to Portugal's Primeira Liga.

German Julian Weigl and Serbian Andrija Zivkovic needed to taken to a local hospital for treatment after reportedly being hit in the face by shards of glass from the bus window hit by rocks.

The team bus was on the freeway headed back to the Benfica campus in the town of Seixal when it was attacked.

Benfica had a chance to take over first place in the Primeira Liga with a win after Porto lost to Famalicao, 2-1, on Wednesday. The draw left Benfica and Porto even with 60 points with nine games to play.
