Julian Green finds home at Greuther Fuerth

German-American Julian Green has found at German second division club Greuther Fuerth.

Two days after setting up David Raum's winning goal in a 1-0 win over rival Nuremberg, Green was given a new contract. He was a free agent but agreed to a one-year deal with a club option for a second year.

Green, 25, is in his third season at Greuther Fuerth, which is tied for sixth place in the 2. Bundesliga with three games to play.

“I am happy that Julian has extended because he is an important player in our system who has had a good season so far despite an injury break," said head coach Stefan Leitl. "With his strong right foot, he can not only finish himself, but, as shown on Saturday, can also use his teammates well. We would, of course, like to see scenes like this in the future."

Green has scored four goals this season to give him 11 in 73 games over three seasons after arriving from VfB Stuttgart. He started out at Bayern Munich but never played a Bundesliga game for Bayern. His only five appearances in Germany's first division came with Hamburg in 2014-15.

“Julian plays an important role in our planning," added managing director for sports Rachid Azzouzi, "and he should take on even more responsibility in our team in the coming season."

Green scored for the USA against Belgium in the second round of the 2014 World Cup. He has four goals and 15 caps for the USA but has not played for the USA since Gregg Berhalter took over as head coach late in 2018.

"We have improved every year now," said Green, "and I want to do my part to ensure that we continue to pursue this development. Working with the coaching team, the whole team and everyone in the club is a lot fun. I am convinced of the quality that is in our team."

Greuther Fuerth is enjoying its best season since 2013-14 when it finished third in the 2. Bundesliga. Prior to going up for one season in the Bundesliga in 2012-13, it was a perennial promotion candidate in the 2. Bundesliga.
