Jony Munoz of Olathe (Kan.) West High School has joined the likes of
Claudio Reyna,
Chris Henderson,
Kyle Martino,
Lee Nguyen,
Cristian Roldan and
Jack Harrison in winning the Gatorade National Boys Soccer Player of the Year award.
Munoz was surprised by his family, coaches and teammates with a drive-by parade outside his
home to inform of the 2019-20 honor. He topped the list of 51 state winners in boys soccer.
The 5-foot-7 senior forward led Olathe West to a 20-1-0 record and the Kansas Class 6A state
championship in 2019. He tallied 36 goals and 19 assists for the Owls, including a goal and assist in the 2-1 win over Blue Valley West High in the state final.
Munoz, a former member of
the U.S. U-16 national team, has maintained a weighted 3.97 GPA in the classroom and earned a scholarship at Liberty University.
