Youth Movement: Californian teen Evan Rotundo signs with Schalke

Evan Rotundo is the latest U.S. youth international to enter the Schalke 04 program

Rotundo signed with the German club and will begin out with its B-Jugend team in the U-17 Bundesliga. He signed on Thursday, his 16th birthday, the first day he was eligible to sign with a German club, holding a French passport.

Rotundo, a midfielder, grew up in the San Diego area and played for Surf Soccer.

He played for the U.S. U-17s at their last camp in February before play was shut down. Other players on the team based in Europe include Kaile Auvray (Lille) in France, Aethan Yohannes (AZ) in the Netherlands and Devan Tanton (UE Cornella) and Federico Oliva (Atletico Madrid) in Spain.

Other players who have gone through the Schalke 04 youth system include Weston McKennie (a starter on the first team), Haji Wright (who played last season for Dutch club VVV Venlo), Nicholas Taitague (whose contract was renewed after spending last season with Schalke's second team) and Matthew Hoppe (who spent his first season with Schalke on its U-19s).
