NWSL Challenge Cup: Spirit climbs into second place

The Washington Spirit won its second game in the preliminary round of the NWSL Challenge Cup with a 1-0 win over the Houston Dash.

Second-year midfielder Bayley Feist scored in the 16th minute for the Spirit, which dominated the match. It was playing without star Rose Lavelle, who was rested.

The win moved the Spirit into second place with seven points. It can finish no lower than fourth in the preliminary round of the eight-team tournament, which concludes on Monday.

The Chicago Red Stars, the 2019 NWSL runners-up, won for the first time in four games with a 1-0 win over the host Utah Royals.

Casey Short broke the deadlock in the 85th minute when she scored on a header off a cross from Savannah McCaskill.

The game marked the tournament debut of U.S. national team defender Tierna Davidson, who exited the game shortly after the half-hour mark.
