College soccer: Southwestern Athletic Conference shifts fall sports to next spring

The Southwestern Athletic Conference became the sixth conference to postpone fall sports because of the coronavirus pandemic, and it has begun formalizing plans to conduct a competitive schedule for the fall sports next spring.

The SWAC mentioned plans for football, playing seven games after an eight-week training period beginning in January. It said details regarding scheduling for women’s soccer and other affected sports will be released at a later date.

The SWAC features 10 schools. Howard's women's team has been playing as an associate member but will leave to join the Northeast Conference in 2021, a move made to significantly reduce travel expenses. It was slated to play as an independent in 2020. The men's team is slated to play in the Sun Belt in 2020 before moving to the NEC in 2021.

Fall season canceled:
Atlantic-10 (M/W).
CAA (M/W).
Ivy League (M/W).
Patriot (M/W).
Conference-only season:
Big East (M/W).
Big Ten (M/W).
Pac-12 (M/W).
Note: M=sponsors men's soccer; W=sponsors women's soccer.
