USL League One: North Texas SC youngsters grow up quickly

Removed from the MLS is Back Tournament because of a Covid-19 outbreak within the team, FC Dallas is back at home training again.

No first-team players from FC Dallas were available for North Texas SC's USL League One season opener, but the defending champions opened with a 2-1 win over Forward Madison FC.

The game was the first at North Texas SC's new home at Globe Life Park, the Texas Rangers' former baseball park, and the first match played before fans -- an announced crowd of 615 -- in Texas since the return to play.

Ronaldo Damus, the 2019 USL League One Golden Boot winner, scored his 17th-career League One goal, and Beni Redzic, 17, scored his first professional goal.

Redzic was one of of four academy players to make their League One debuts along with Justin Che, 16, Diego Hernandez, 15, and Collin Smith 16. The average age of the 14 players North Texas SC coach Eric Quill used was 19.9.

“They've grown a lot of these past few weeks," he said. "We had a lot of these 05’s come in. We got Diego in the game. I know it wasn’t much but it’s a moment that I'm proud of Diego for earning. We would never have had him in the 16-man roster if we didn’t think he could handle it."
