Yanks Abroad: Bayern Munich calls up Chris Richards for Champions League run

Chris Richards will be with Bayern first team for its final run for the 2019-20 Champions League season.

He was called up as a replacement for French World Cup champion Benjamin Pavard, who is injured.

The 20-year-old Alabaman made his Bundesliga debut on the day Bayern clinched its eighth straight league title. He spent most of the season with Bayern Munich II, which won the 3. Liga title as the only second team in the third tier of German soccer.

Richards played part of the 3. Liga season at right back, Pavard's position, but he was mostly used at center back, where he played for the USA at the 2019 Under-20 World Cup.

Coach Hansi Flick's likely move to replace Pavard will be to shift Joshua Kimmich to right back, where he started for two seasons before moving to midfield, where he was one of the outstanding players in Bayern's title run. Another option is little-used Spaniard Alvaro Odriozola, on loan from Real Madrid.

Two teenagers were called up to the first team for the remainder of the 2019-20 Champions League campaign: 17-year-old English-German Bright Arrey-Mbi and 18-year-old German-American Malik Tillman.

...and yet he didn't make the bench for the recent Marseille friendly? Best of luck to this youngster--great experience to drive him forward.
