Around NISA: Eric Wynalda named New Amsterdam FC head coach

Eric Wynalda has been named the head coach of the Bronx-based New Amsterdam FC, which is slated to start its first season in NISA.

The National Soccer Hall of Famer left the USL Championship's Las Vegas Lights six weeks ago.

New Amsterdam FC and the New York Cosmos are two new teams in NISA, whose spring championship was cut short after two weeks of play in March. It is slated to start its fall season in August.

New Amsterdam FC and the Cosmos will meet on Sunday in Warwick, New York, as part of one of four regional competitions in the NISA Independent Cup. (Most of the teams are not NISA clubs.)

Wynalda coached Cal FC on its run to the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals in 2012 and served as technical director for NASL’s Atlanta Silverbacks in 2013 when they won the NASL spring championship. In 2017, he coached the LA Wolves to a UPSL title.

After his retirement as a player, he worked for ESPN and Fox Sports as an analyst. He ran for U.S. Soccer president in 2018

1904 FC sits out. NISA was slated to have 10 teams in the fall season, but 1904 FC pulled out. In a statement, the San Diego club's manager and co-founder, Alex Gontran, said the decision to sit out the fall season was made "for the long-term viability of the club. COVID-19, like for many other teams and businesses, has impacted us greatly. Playing during the pandemic, behind closed doors, creates a significant financial burden to the club and we need spend our resources wisely."

Only three teams remain in the Western Conference: Cal United Strikers FC, LA Force and Oakland Roots.

In June, NISA announced plans to begin play in the Eastern Conference on Aug. 8 and the Western Conference on Sept. 5, but no schedule has been released.

Besides New Amsterdam FC and the Cosmos, the Eastern Conference teams are Chattanooga FC, Detroit City FC, Michigan Stars and Stumptown Athletic.

Congrats Eric W. gave us a lot of inspiring soccer. Never forget the first goal in MLS with the SJ Clash. I always thought you should be managing
    the USMNT.
