The USL Championship's Philadelphia Union II (which played in recent years as Bethlehem Steel) parted ways with German head coach Sven Gartung
, and named former West Virginia University head
coach Marlon LeBlanc
as its head coach.
Gartung was brought in to coach Union II after head coach Brendan Burke
moved into the position of head of recruitment operations for
both the Union and Union II.
LeBlanc joined the Union as its U-17 coach after stepping down at West Virginia in December. LeBlanc coached the Mountaineers for 14 seasons and led them to
wins in the NCAA Tournament in 2018 and 2019.
LeBlanc's son, Kellan
, is a rising 7th grader and has been playing on Union academy teams (U-12, U-13 and U-14). LeBlanc's wife had
driven Kellan, which turned 12 in March, from Morgantown to Philadelphia -- 314 miles each way -- each week for a season before they moved to Philadelphia last summer.
coached Union starters Raymon Gaddis
and Jack Elliott
at West Virginia, led Union II to its first win of the season with a 3-2 win over New York Red Bulls II on Wednesday.
The winning goal was scored by 16-year-old substitute Jack Jasinski
. Patrick Bohui
, also 16, had opened the scoring with his first pro just 21 seconds into the game. The third goal was
scored by 17-year-old Jack McGlynn
. (Jasinski and Bohui are both playing on academy contracts. McGlynn, who hails from Middle Village, New York, signed a USL pro contract in March.)
The victory ended a 12-game winless streak dating back to September 2019. Union II had lost its first four games since the restart by a margin of 18-3.
