College: Mountain West and remaining CAA schools shut down fall sports

The Mid-American Conference became the 12th NCAA Division I conference to postpone all fall sports due to continuing concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Of the 12 conferences, 11 have women's soccer championships and nine sponsor men's soccer, but most of the other 20 conferences plan to delay their season's start -- the Horizon League won't begin play until Oct. 1 -- or will limit play to conference play. (Two of the conferences that have postponed fall sports -- Atlantic-10 and Northeast -- plan to reevaluate the situation a month or more from now.)

Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson:
"We were hopeful we could carefully and responsibly conduct competition as originally scheduled with essential protocols in place. However, numerous external factors and unknowns outside our control made this difficult decision necessary. I fully understand the impact of this outcome on our student-athletes, coaches, administrators and staff who work so hard daily to play the sports we all love, and I share in their disappointment. We will continue to navigate this pandemic together, overcome the obstacles and return to intercollegiate athletics at the earliest opportunity."

The Mountain West, which sponsors women's soccer but not men's soccer, is the second of the 10 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) conferences to postpone fall sports until the spring. Like the Mid-American, the Mountain West is a member of the Group 5 conferences. Decisions from the Power 5 conferences are expected to come this week with the Big Ten and Pac-12 likely to vote on Tuesday.

The last four teams in the CAA that had not postponed fall sports did so on Monday. The College of Charleston, Elon, James Madison and UNC Wilmington made the announcement at the same time. The CAA had left it up to each school to try to set its own schedule in soccer, women's volleyball and cross country.

The NCAA's Board of Governors has left it up to the three divisions to decide whether to proceed with fall sports. On Wednesday, the NCAA Division II and III councils postponed fall sports championships. The NCAA Division I council has until Aug. 21 to decide whether to proceed with fall championships in the sports it organize. (It doesn't run the FBS postseason championship.)
