College: More than half of NCAA DI conferences have postponed fall sports

The Big East and Big South are the latest conferences that have postponed fall sports.

The Big East stated that it "will assess alternative options to stage fall sports contests during the spring of 2021.” The Big East's "intention is to shift these fall seasons to the spring as we would like nothing more than to crown Big South champions in all 19 of our sports this year.”

Here's an update on where NCAA Division I conferences stand on whether to play fall sports ...

Total:

Conferences: 32
Conferences with women's soccer: 31.
Conferences with men's soccer: 24.

Postponed fall sports:
Conferences: 17.
Conferences with women's soccer: 16.
Conferences with men's soccer: 14.

The NCAA's Board of Governors has left it up to the three divisions to decide whether to proceed with fall sports. The NCAA Division II and III councils cancelled fall sports championships but won't hold them in the spring.

The NCAA Division I council has until Aug. 21 to decide whether to proceed with fall championships in the sports it organizes. (It doesn't run the FBS postseason championship.)

If 50 percent or more of eligible teams in a particular division's sport cancel their fall season, there will be no fall NCAA championship in that sport. The threshold for the FCS postseason championship has already been reached.

Wednesday's postponements have pushed the number of soccer teams whose conferences have "postponed" fall sports above 50 percent though two conferences -- Atlantic-10 and Northeast -- intend to reassess the situation later in season.

Eligibility. On Wednesday, the NCAA Division I Council did make recommendations on eligibility for athletes who play fall sports. If they later opt out or the season is ended due to COVID-19 they will receive an extension of their five-year period of eligibility and an additional season of competition if they participated in less than 50 percent of the maximum number of competitions allowed in each sport by Division I rules

Recruiting. The extended the recruiting dead period, which has been in place since March, through the month of September.
