USL Championship: New Mexico United's road warriors sweep Real Monarchs

Forced to play all its games so far this season on the road because of state health restrictions, New Mexico United beat the defending champion Real Monarchs twice in four days, 2-0 and 2-1, to improve its record to 6-2-1 and open up a seven-point lead the USL Championship's Group C.

Former Monarchs defender Kalen Ryden and former U.S. U-20 Amando Moreno scored in the win on Wednesday.

On Saturday, Christopher Wehan set up Moreno for the first goal and scored the second himself as New Mexico United staked itself to a 2-0 lead.

The Utah trip was the first one New Mexico United took by plane. It took a bus to play its first seven games on the road.

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham's order requiring a mandatory 14-day self-quarantine for most visitors has restricted the second-year club from playing at home in 2020.

In 2019, New Mexico United led the USL Championship in attendance. It played at Isotopes Park, the baseball home of Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes. If the state quarantine is lifted, New Mexico United will play its remaining home games at the University of New Mexico Soccer Complex.

As part of its return to play agreement, USL Championship approved unbalanced schedules, anticipating that some teams would face local restrictions.
