USL Championship: Players interrupt play to show united front against social injustice and racism

At USL Championship matches across the country this weekend, play was stopped at the seven-minute mark when players gathered at the center circle and they knelt until 8:46.

The planned stoppage demonstrated their united front against social injustice and racism.

The 7-minute mark was chosen to recognize the number of times Jacob Blake was shot in the back by a police officer last Sunday in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

The 8:46 represented the time in minutes and seconds former officer Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd’s neck when Floyd was killed on May 25 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Thirteen games were played over the weekend in the USL Championship.

Saturday's match between Memphis 901 FC and North Carolina FC in Cary, North Carolina, was postponed so Memphis 901 FC players could visit the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis.

Sunday's match between the Tacoma Defiance and Portland Timbers 2 was postponed because a covered person within the Timbers 2 organization has shown symptoms for COVID-19.
