ACC soccer power forced to sit out fall

ACC teams are still planning on playing soccer in the fall, but the N.C. State women won't be one of them.

The Wolfpack, which advanced to the third round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament, will not compete this fall, citing a deleted roster, including injuries and international students who have not returned to school since they were sent home in March.

Last week N.C. State switched to online classes for the remainder of the fall semester and closed its campus residence halls in response to the spread of COVID-19. More than 20 clusters were confirmed since school reopened on Aug. 10.

UNC losses. Rival North Carolina lost two of its most experienced players when rising seniors Alessia Russo and Lotte Wubben-Moy both announced that they will not return to Chapel Hill from England, citing the uncertainty of the season.

Russo was named the 2019 ACC Tournament MVP after she scored the game-winning goal to lift the Tar Heels to a 2-1 victory over No. 1 Virginia in the championship game for their 22nd tournament title.

I could see how a deleted roster might cause a problem on game day but more likely, NC state has a depleted roster.
