All but four conferences have called off fall competition, but a few other teams are pushing ahead with non-conference schedules.
Texas State, Louisiana and South Alabama, whose women's
team begin play this weekend, play in the Sun Belt Conference, which offers both men's (with just four teams) and women's soccer championships this fall.
In addition, three teams from the
Southland Conference, which doesn't offer conference play this fall in women's soccer, will play this weekend: Abilene Christian, Houston Baptist and Stephen F. Austin.
Christian, which opens at Louisiana on Friday night on ESPN+, currently has four games scheduled -- two against Southland teams and two against Sun Belt teams -- but might add to its schedule.
“It was just a matter of weeding out the programs who were not going to play along with the ones who were going conference only,” Abilene Christian coach Casey Wilson told the ACU Optimist
. “It took some time and patience, and we are thankful that our administration was wanting us
to get back to us playing versus just shutting down.”
Wilson said the Wildcats might add games against teams from Division II Lone Star Conference in the fall.
Belt women's teams will begin play next weekend. The ACC (men and women) kick off on Sept. 10 while the Big 12 and SEC follow on Sept. 11 and Sept. 18, respectively. Friday, September 4
