Around College Soccer: Big 12 opener postponed due to COVID-19

The Big 12 Conference is set to kick off its women's college season on Friday, but already one game has had to postponed due to COVID-19.

The Kansas State-Texas Tech game was called off because two Texas Tech players tested positive for COVID-19. Seven other players, including two goalkeepers, were deemed to have been close contacts. They have tested negative three times but won't be allowed to return in time for Friday's game.

"It is disappointing but was to be expected during the 2020 season," said K-State coach Mike Dibbini. "We have been working hard the last month in preparation. We were very excited to play in front of our home crowd. We are very lucky to have the opportunity to play this fall and we now have to focus on the next match."

The Big 12 schedule calls for each team to play nine conference games over nine weekends.

England call-ups. Lotte Wubben-Moy and Alessia Russo, who both left the North Carolina ahead of their senior seasons because of uncertainty surrounding the college season, were called up to the England national team training camp next Tuesday in Burton, the first since the pandemic hit.

Wubben-Moy is one of seven players earning their first international call-ups. Russo was called up for the SheBelieves Cup in March. England's first game will be next month against Germany in Wiesbaden.
