MLS releases schedule through September, postseason plans

In the COVID-19 era, MLS schedulers are taking the piece-meal approach.

After a set of six games scheduled following the MLS is Back Tournament, teams will play three games Sept. 18-27. The final nine games to take the MLS regular season up to the November FIFA window will be announced later.

MLS: Schedule

Unable to travel back and forth from Canada to the United States or welcome visiting U.S. teams without quarantines, MLS's three Canadian teams -- Toronto FC, Montreal and Vancouver -- will play their three games in the United States. One "home" game will be included in the mix:

Montreal vs. Philadelphia Sept. 20 at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J.
Toronto FC vs. Columbus Sept. 27 at Rentschler Field in Hartford, Conn.
Vancouver vs. Portland Sept. 27 at Providence Park in Portland, Ore.

MLS also confirmed that it will take 18 teams for the playoffs -- 10 of 14 teams in the Eastern Conference and eight of 12 in Western Conference. Play-in matches (No. 7 vs. No. 10, and No. 8 vs. No. 9) will be required to determine the two Eastern Conference teams that will join the top six finishers in Round 1.

Like in 2019, the 2020 playoffs will involve single-elimination games straight through MLS Cup on Dec.12.
