Tim Mulqueen out as Memphis 901 FC head coach

Tim Mulqueen has been fired as the Memphis 901 FC head coach following a pair of USL Championship matches in which Memphis blew 2-0 leads.

In the first game, Matt Hundley's goal in stoppage time rescued Memphis, giving it a 3-2 win over North Carolina FC after it conceded two goals in the last four minutes. The win ended a five-game winless streak.

On Sunday, Memphis wasn't so fortunate against North Carolina FC, losing 3-2 after leading 2-0 in the first half. Nazmi Albadawi's goal in the 89th minute completed the NCFC comeback.

Assistant coach Ben Pirmann was named interim head coach to replace Mulqueen, who was Tim Howard's first pro goalkeeper coach. Howard is a Memphis 901 FC co-owner as well as its sporting director and goalkeeper. He wasn't in goal for either game against NCFC.

“Unfortunately, the results have fallen short of our expectations," said Howard. "I wish Mulch nothing but the very best in his future coaching endeavors. The club will quickly move forward in conducting an international search for our next head coach.”

Pirmann is a former Michigan State assistant coach and the head coach of the Detroit City FC.
