Good Friday for young Americans in Europe

Americans enjoyed a good day in Europe as the 2020-21 season moved into full swing.

Chris Richards came on as one of three substitutes in Bayern Munich's 8-0 win over Schalke 04 to open yet another Bundesliga title defense.

It was the 20-year-old Alabaman's second appearance for Bayern. He made a late appearance in Bayern's 2020 title-clinching win in June.

Schalke 04 struggled late in the 2019-20 season so the defeat was no surprise. Just how big it was underscored Bayern's domination of German soccer.

“It was superb from us," said Bayern coach Hansi Flick. "Before the game we wanted this to be a game that would define where we are at this stage and my players did it very well. We wanted to show that in this season again we are here.”

Richards was one of four Americans from the 2019 U.S. U-20 World Cup to play on Friday.

Netherlands. Richie Ledezma had the lone goal for Jong PSV in its 2-1 loss to club rival Eindhoven. Chris Gloster also got the start -- his first of the season -- in the defeat.

Also in the Eerste Divisie, the Dutch second tier, Alex Mendez got his first start of the season for Jong Ajax and assisted on Brian Brobbey's goal in the 3-0 win over Go Ahead Eagles.

Germany.  In the Regionalliga, 18-year-old Bryang Kayo, who represented the USA at the 2019 U-17 World Cup, scored 14 minutes into Wolfsburg II's 3-2 win over HSC Hannover. Michael Edwards came on as a sub for Wolfsburg II.
