Phoenix Rising coach Rick Schantz and Junior Flemmings placed on administrative leave

Phoenix Rising coach Rick Schantz and midfielder Junior Flemmings  have been placed on administrative leave.

The USL Championship club's announcement came a day after the San Diego Loyal walked off the field with a 3-1 lead. Flemmings was accused of making a homophobic slur at the Loyal's Collin Martin, who is gay. When Schantz did not remove Flemmings from the game to start the second half, the Loyal forfeited the game.

The Rising said Flemmings' leave was taken so he could focus on the USL investigation into the incident. It said Schantz was taking a leave for reasons unrelated to the investigation.

Flemmings, who is Jamaican, is in his fifth season in the USL. Schantz took over as Rising head coach in November 2018 after finishing the season as interim coach. He came to the Rising from FC Tucson, where he was head coach was six years.
