The NWSL expansion team slated to begin play in 2022 has a name: Angel City FC.
And it has new investors.
Tennis great
Billie Jean King, WNBA legend
Candace
Parker and Alpine skiing gold-medalist
Lindsey Vonn are among the sporting greats in the new group of founding investors.
Fourteen former U.S. women's national team players,
including
Julie Foudy,
Mia Hamm and
Abby Wambach, were among the original investors.
"We need everyone to invest in women’s sports and [partner and former
tennis star
Ilana [Kloss] and I are proud to stand with the Angel City FC ownership group and help make new history in Southern California sports," said King. "Angel City's mission to make an
impact on and off-the field, and to provide an opportunity to some of the best professional female athletes in the world to play on a stage as powerful as Los Angeles, sends a strong message to young
girls in the community and beyond.”
Angel City is headed by founder and president
Julie Uhrman. It announced three staff hires:
Jessica Smith (head of
corporate partnerships),
Kim McCauley (director of recruitment and analytics) and
Catherine Dávila (head of community).
