MLS: Philadelphia demolishes Toronto FC to take lead in Supporters' Shield race

The Philadelphia Union moved into first in the Supporters' Shield race -- yes, it will be awarded in 2020 after all -- when it beat Toronto FC, 5-0, at home on Saturday night at Subaru Park.

The win moved the Union into a tie with TFC for the Eastern Conference lead with 41 points and holds the edge on the second tiebreaker with a better goal difference (plus-22 vs. plus-8).

Brazilian Sergio Santos scored a hat trick to lead the Union, which could have easily scored twice as many goals. It finished with 27 shots tonight, one shy of tying a team record.

"I thought that was our most complete 90 minutes," said Union coach Jim Curtin. "I think it’s a good time to be peaking.”

Jamiro Monteiro
scored his second goal of the season and registered an assist, while defender Mark McKenzie had the game's other goal. Kai Wagner and Kacper Przybylko recorded two assists.

The Union, the only team in MLS with a perfect record at home, where it finishes the season with two of its three final regular-season games (Chicago and New England). Its only away match is against Columbus.

Toronto, which has not played at home since Sept. 1, has games against NYCFC and Inter Miami in East Hartford, Connecticut, its U.S. home for the rest of the 2020 season, before finishing at the New York Red Bulls.
