Yanks Abroad: Yunus Musah's Valencia hands Real Madrid embarrassing defeat

Yunus Musah, the 17-year-old midfielder called up for the first time to the U.S. national team, started for Valencia in its 4-1 win over Real Madrd.

Musah almost scored in the second game in a row. He put away the rebound of teammate's Carlos Soler missed penalty kick in the 30th minute, but the goal was nullified because he had encroached before the spot kick was taken.

Soler converted the retaken penalty kick, one of three Valencia was awarded and he scored.

Musah was just one of six of the 24 U.S. players called up for friendlies against Wales and Panama who started this weekend.

The fact that so many Americans are playing professionally in Europe, some simply playing and others thriving says volumes about how inadequate MLS is for the development of American soccer players.

A good many of these players came through MLS Academy teams, so stop knocking MLS.
It needs improvement, and continues to do so, but the clubs are now producing exciting, young players. My only criticism is I wish the league mandate each club field a minimum two American U-21 players at all times to better promote their development.
