U.S. national team coach Gregg Berhalter called up 12 uncapped players in his squad of 22 players for the men's international friendly against El Salvador on Dec. 9 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
There's experience with defenders Aaron Long and Walker Zimmerman and winger Paul Arriola, who played for the USA at the 2019 Gold Cup. Kellyn Acosta, Sebastian Lletget and Arriola represented the USA in qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.
The uncapped players include 18-year-old Efrain Alvarez (photo), who starred for Mexico at the 2019 U-17 World Cup. The LA Galaxy forward would need to a change of association approved by FIFA to play for the USA. Three other players have eligibility for the 2021 Under-20 World Cup: goalkeepers CJ Dos Santos and David Ochoa and midfielder Cole Bassett.
Dos Santos is the only player not based in MLS. He is a backup goalkeeper for Benfica's second team in Portugal's ProLiga, the second tier of Portuguese pro soccer.
Fourteen players are currently eligible for the U.S. U-23 national team that will seek to qualify in March 2021 for the 2021 Olympic men's soccer competition.
The squad includes two MLS rookies: Mauricio Pineda (Chicago Fire), who played college soccer at North Carolina, and Daryl Dike (Orlando City) from Orlando City.
Additional players may be added to the squad after the completion of the MLS Western Conference semifinals on Tuesday and Thursday.
