Awards: Gio Reyna named 2020 U.S. Soccer Young Male Player of the Year

Gio Reyna, who has become a starter for Borussia Dortmund in his first year with the German powerhouse's first team and made his U.S. senior debut a day before his 18th birthday, was named the 2020 U.S. Soccer Young Male Player of the Year.

Just four days after debuting in a 0-0 tie with Wales, Reyna became the third-youngest goal scorer in men's national team history, scoring on a free kick in a 6-2 victory over Panama in Austria.

But it was his rise from U-19 team player to lock starter in his first year at Dortmund that turned heads across Europe and earned him a long-term extension with Dortmund through 2025.

Gio Reyna's first year at Dortmund:
Jan. 18. Makes Bundesliga debut at Augsburg.
Feb. 4. Scores first goal (on a rocket) in German Cup loss to Werder Bremen.
Feb. 18. Sets up winner for Erling Haaland against PSG in Champions League.
Sept. 19. Scores first Bundesliga in 2020-21 opener, a 3–0 win over Borussia Moenchengladbach.
Oct. 3. Sets up three goals in a 4–0 win over Freiburg.
Dec. 5. Scores on a shake and bake in a 1-1 tie with Eintracht Frankfurt.
Dec. 12. Scores another exquisite goal in a 5-1 loss to VfB Stuttgart.

Also assisted on BVB's first goal of the UCL campaign and played every match (usually starting or being on the pitch as a sub when they scored game winners) in BVB's first place finish in the group stage. Hell of a year for a player who turned 18 during the season.
