What They're Saying: Steve Mandanda

“Today's events sadden me and are unacceptable. A sports crisis can in no way justify such an outburst of violence. It's time for calm.”

-- French national team goalkeeper Steve Mandanda, the longtime Marseille captain with 440 Ligue 1 appearances, after Marseille fans rampaged La Commanderie, the club's training complex, on Saturday afternoon, hours before the home game against Rennes, which was postponed. The fans threw flares and projectiles to protest the club's management and poor form. The club, whose fans are considered the most volatile in France, is owned by American Frank McCourt, the former Los Angeles Dodgers owner. At St. Etienne, another long-standing French soccer power that is struggling, 300 fans stormed what was supposed to be a closed-door training session on Saturday though the incident ended without violence.
