Vlatko Andonovski named his 23-player squad that will represent the USA at the 2021 SheBelieves Cup, which begins Feb. 18 in Orlando.
The squad features the return of long-time stars Alex Morgan
(COVID-19 positive) and Christen Press
(illness), who missed the January camp. The only other player who was not Orlando, where the USA beat Colombia twice, is goalkeeper Casey Murphy
(only uncapped player on the roster).
The U.S. roster features 17 players on NWSL teams and six currently playing in Europe, including Press. The most notable absence is that of Tobin Heath
, Press' Manchester United teammate who faces a layoff of up to 12 weeks with an ankle injury.
Three players who dressed in the two-game Colombia series weren't picked for the SheBelieves Cup roster: two-time world champions Ashlyn Harris
and Ali Krieger
, who are married. Both play for the Orlando Pride.
Racing Louisville's Emily Fox
, who came on as a sub late in the second Colombia game, will train with the national team, along with Jaelin Howell
(Florida State) and Mallory Pugh
(Chicago Red Stars).
Andonovski did not want to rule out the chances of Harris, 35, and Krieger, 36, making the Olympic team in July.
“It’s still experimental," he said of his roster for the SheBelieves Cup. "If we had that 2020 year to prepare for the Olympics, then it would be a little different, then we would be a little closer to finalizing the roster."
Krieger started against Colombia in the second game, a 6-0 win. Harris dressed the second game, in which Jane Campbell
started. Campbell looks to be an early favorite to back up Alyssa Naeher
Andonovski can only take 18 players to Japan, so he has quite a bit of work ahead of him if you consider the SheBelieves Cup roster plus the injured Heath, a two-time world championship starter, make 24 players, plus on top of that there are Harris and Krieger and the three training players. He said he knows where the team stands with Harris and Krieger.
"We know the quality," he said. "We know what we can expect. It’s a good opportunity for me to look at other players.” Datebook:
