Mido Moves Back to Tottenham

Roma looks set to let Egyptian striker Mido make a permanent return to Tottenham's White Hart Lane after a successful 18-month loan spell with Spurs. Tottenham has now agreed to pay $6.5 million for the 23-year old and will send Brazilian defender Rodrigo Defendi to Roma as part of the transfer. At the end of last season, it looked as though Mido's hopes of returning to Tottenham were dashed after Manager Martin Jol opted to bring in Dimitar Berbatov, a striker who is similar in height and playing style to Mido, but after a fruitless search for a striking partner for the Bulgarian, Spurs have returned to the player who scored 11 goals for them last season. Both Mido and Berbatov are strong, powerful forwards who make perfect foils for the smaller, wilier, Robbie Keane and Jermain Defoe. Tottenham also wanted to make a late move to sign Steed Malbranque from Fulham, although West Ham yesterday agreed to a $4 million fee for the midfielder. Spurs may yet make a late bid. Their hopes of signing Stewart Downing have all but vanished. Malbranque, meanwhile, is said to be keen on a move to White Hart Lane, after being banished by Fulham manager Chris Coleman for refusing to pledge his future to the club.
