Friday: College soccer updates

Loyola Marymount, the WCC preseason men's favorite, opened the 2020-21 season with a 1-0 victory over UCLA.
 
Junior forward Ronaldo Brown scored the game's only goal in the 31st minute on a header  inside the far post off a cross from Narciso Cervantes.

-- Noah Singelmann set up both Syracuse goals scored by Abdi Salim and Jeorgio Kocevski.

-- Gabe Segal, Will Richmond and Zach Ryan scored for the Cardinal, which completed its scoring on an own goal.

UCLA rallied from a goal down in the second half to beat BYU, 2-1, in a battle of Pac-12 and WCC women's powerhouses.

Marley Canales converted a penalty kick in the 59th minute to even the score, and freshman Sunshine Fontes, the all-time leading scorer for U.S. U-17 national team, scored her first collegiate goal in the 74th minute to give the Bruins the win.

Both players are making comeback after suffering ACL injuries.
