Women in Europe: Chelsea pulls ahead in Women's Super League

Two days after Manchester City closed the gap with a 3-0 win over Manchester United, Chelsea crushed Reading, 5-0, to open up a five-point lead on second-place City in the FA Women's Super League.

Fran Kirby scored a hat trick for Chelsea to give her 11 goals on the season. She is tied with Chelsea teammate Sam Kerr, one goal behind the WSL leader, Arsenal's Vivianne Miedema.

Manchester City, winner of seven straight league games, has a game in hand on Chelsea. United dropped to third place, six points behind Chelsea.

Americans Abby Dahlkemper (City) and Christen Press (United) started in the Manchester derby. Rose Lavelle was a late sub for City. All three players will play for the USA at the SheBelieves Cup.

Bayern Munich is 14-0-0 in Germany's Frauen-Bundesliga with a goal difference of 54-2 after its 7-0 win over Werder Bremen. In Spain, Barcelona is 16-0-0 (84-3 goal difference), while Juventus leads Italy's Serie A with a 13-0-0 record (40-6).

The French federation was forced to cancel the Tournoi de France after Iceland and Norway withdrew due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis in Europe, leaving Switzerland as the only team willing to face the Bleues. They will play two friendlies in Sedan and Metz during the February window.
