MLS Moves: Rapids make 16-year-old Darren Yapi their youngest signing ever

The Colorado Rapids signed 16-year-old forward Darren Yapi to a Homegrown Player contract from their academy program, making him the youngest player ever to sign a pro contract with the club.

Yapi, who played for the USA with the U-17s at the 2020 UEFA Development Tournament, joined the Rapids Academy in the U-12 age group and scored 64 goals in 95 appearances for Rapids academy teams. He played on an (amateur) academy contract last summer for the USL Championship's Colorado Springs Switchbacks.

The Rapids also signed 19-year-old midfielder Oliver Larraz to a two-year Homegrown Player contract with a club option for an additional two years.

Larraz spent time in 2019 with German club Duisburg's U-19s.

Yapi and Larraz are the eighth and ninth players to sign HG contracts with the Rapids since 2017. Cole Bassett and Sam Vines are training with the U.S. U-23s ahead of the Olympic qualifying tournament in Mexico.
