College Women: Arizona State stuns UCLA with 'fairy-tale' winner

Arizona State beat UCLA for the first time since 2000 with a 2-1 win in a battle of unbeaten Pac-12 teams.

Cori Sullivan scored the golden goal, her first of the season, with two minutes remaining in the first overtime.

"It's a fairy-tale for Cori," said ASU head coach Graham Winkworth. "She's nine months to the day that she had surgery and she's been out so long and what a nice story."

UCLA was short-handed for the last eight minutes of regulation and overtime after Kennedy Faulknor was given a red card.

Arizona State (4-0-2) and Washington State (1-0-1) are the only unbeaten teams left in Pac-12 play. The Cougars had four games cancelled because of COVID-19 protocols within their program.

UCLA (5-1-0), Stanford (4-1-0) and Washington (3-1-2) all have one loss in games that count in the conference standings.

Big Ten | Penn State clinched the Big Ten regular-season title when it won, 3-0, at Nebraska and Rutgers fell, 1-0, at Wisconsin. It was the Nittany Lions’ 20th Big Ten crown and 16th outright championship. The Big Ten regular season will wrap up next Saturday, and the conference tournament will begin three days after that.

Conference USA | North Texas is guaranteed to finish with a winning record for the 26th straight season after beating UAB, 3-1. Berklee Peters, Elle Marie DeFrain and Allie Byrd all scored before the 20th minute for the Mean Green, which has never had a losing season.

Missouri Valley | The Loyola (Chicago) won its third consecutive Missouri Valley regular-season title with a 5-0 win over Southern Illinois. Megan Nemec led the Ramblers (6-0-1) with two goals and two assists to finish the week with three goals and four assists.
