MLS: Fire to host Polish club Legia-Daewoo Warsaw

The Chicago Fire has announced that it will face Polish First Division Club Legia-Daewoo Warsaw in an exhibition on Wednesday, June 16th at 7:30 p.m. (CT) at Soldier Field. Legia-Daewoo Warsaw is one of the biggest football teams in Poland and arguably its most famous. In February of 1997, Legia Warsaw changed its name to Legia-Daewoo Warsaw after Daewoo-FSO became its title sponsor. Fire players Roman Kosecki and Jerzy Podbrozny have both played for Legia. "Bringing a top Polish club team to Chicago is our way of saying 'Thank You' to Chicago's Polish community for its tremendous support of the Fire," said Fire GM Peter Wilt. "Our Polish fans will get a chance to see one of their homeland teams, Legia, and all Fire fans will get to see one of the most historic teams from Eastern Europe and see top quality international soccer right here in Chicago. This game achieves one of our goals, to bring international soccer and an international atmosphere to Soldier Field and Chicago." Legia was founded in April 1916 during the First World War, and began playing First Division football in Poland in 1927. Legia has won the Polish First Division 6 times (1955, 1956, 1969, 1970, 1994, 1995) and has also won the Polish Cup 12 times. Fire forward Roman Kosecki last donned the green kit of Legia in 1997-98, after being transferred for f150,000 he appeared in 11 games, registering two assists. He also played two years for Legia in 1989-90 and 1990-91. During the 1989-90 season, Kosecki appeared in 28 games scoring five goals. In 1990-91 he played the first half of the season for Legia appearing in 13 games and scoring four goals. Midfielder Jerzy Podbrozny spent two-and-a-half seasons with Legia from 1993-96. Podbrozny was transferred from Polish club Lech Poznan, where he twice led all of Poland in scoring, and in 93-94, appeared in 17 games and scored 11 goals. In his first full season with Legia, 94-95, he played 32 games, tallying 15 goals. In 1995-96, Podbrozny appeared in 28 games, scoring 19 goals. One of those goals came in the prestigious UEFA Champions League. Tickets for the match go on sale at 10:00 a.m. (CT) on Monday, May 24th. Full season ticket holders already have tickets for the game as Bonus Game "A" in their full-season ticket package will be accepted for admittance.
