NWSL Challenge Cup: Spirit future is bright with youngsters Sanchez and Rodman

One of the question marks about the NWSL is who will be its stars of tomorrow, the successors to the many U.S. national team stars who are in their 30s and will start retiring after the Olympics.

Two of the most exciting young players are 22-year-old Ashley Sanchez and 18-year-old Trinity Rodman, who teamed up to give the Washington Spirit its first win of the NWSL Challenge Cup, a 1-0 victory over expansion Racing Louisville.

Thursday's match at Audi Field appeared to be headed toward a scoreless draw in stoppage time when Tori Huster found Rodman on the wing. The daughter of NBA star Dennis Rodman hit a cross into the penalty area that Sanchez one-timed with a volley into the goal. Rodman had scored her first NWSL goal on Saturday in the Spirit's 3-2 loss at the North Carolina Courage.
