Cup season: Two more Americans capture European trophies

For the second weekend in a row, two Americans won European trophies.

Last week, it was Sergino Dest (Barcelona's record 31st Copa del Rey) and Jordan Siebatcheu (Young Boys -- with seven games to spare -- in Swiss Super League).

On Sunday, it was Zack Steffen and Mark McKenzie.

Steffen won his first trophy since joining Manchester City after a season on loan at Germany's Fortuna Duesseldorf.

Steffen was in goal for the 1-0 win over Tottenham in the Carabao Cup final, his fifth shutout in five starts in the competition. He has played only one game in the Premier League as the backup to Brazilian Ederson, but he has started every game in the League Cup and FA Cup, where City fell to Chelsea, 1-0, in the semifinals. That loss was Steffen's only defeat in 12 games. He won the other 11, six by shutout.

The former Columbus Crew goalkeeper could finish with an unprecedented three trophies in 2021. Manchester City leads second-place Manchester United by 10 points with five games to play in the Premier League, and it faces Paris St. Germain in the UEFA Champions League semifinals.

Steffen became the fourth American to win the League Cup after John Harkes (Sheffield Wednesday 1991) and goalkeepers Kasey Keller (Leicester City 1997) and Brad Friedel (Blackburn Rovers 2002).

McKenzie came on with three minutes to play in Genk's 2-1 win over Standard Liege to win its fourth Belgian Cup title. He has played 11 games for Genk since his transfer from the Philadelphia Union in January.

Americans have already won four domestic cup titles in 2021 and could win seven more. Christian Pulisic (Chelsea) and Steffen are still alive in the UEFA Champions League. Bryan Reynolds' Roma has advanced to the Europa League semifinals but he is not listed on its roster for UEFA play.

Pretty decent chance there will be American lifting trophies in three more Big 5 domestic European Cups (Pulisic FA, Reyna/Adams Pokal, McKennie Italian). Don't hate Pulisic or Steffen's chances at UCL either, though obviously Steffen won't play in that unless forced by injury.
