NCAA DI Women's Tournament: Two seeds fall in shootouts in second round

A pair of seeds -- No. 8 USC and No. 15 Saint Louis -- lost in shootouts in the second round of the NCAA Division I Women's Tournament being played entirely in North Carolina.

Ole Miss came back from two goals down at the half to beat Trojans, 3-2, in a shootout after their match ended 2-2.

Goalkeeper Olivia Sekany made a save to set herself up to score the winner in the fifth round of the shootout and give Washington a 4-3 win over SLU after their match ended 0-0.

A third seed, No. 14 Clemson, survived penalty kicks to move past Rutgers (5-3 after a 1-1 tie).

No. 3 seed UCLA looked to headed to defeat when Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Reilyn Turner scored twice in the last five minutes to give the Bruins a 2-1 win over Iowa.

The two Big 12 teams in action combined for 13 goals. No. 10 seed Oklahoma State had three players scored twice in a 7-0 over South Alabama. No. 4 seed TCU scored four goals in less than five minutes to start the second half en route to a 6-2 win over New Mexico.  The six goals were twice as many as the Horned Frogs had scored in their five previous NCAA Tournament matches.

North Carolina, the only team to have played in every NCAA Tournament, opened with a 2-0 win over Denver. The Tar Heels are now 26-1 all-time in the second round. Their only loss came in 2015, a 1-0 defeat to Texas A&M.

The Aggies were the other second-round winners on Friday with a 2-0 win over South Florida.
