"beIN [Sports] is an incredibly important partner of LaLiga globally -- they have rights in over 70 territories -- but in the U.S. it was clear that we wanted to kind of give that next step. We needed to find another partner."
-- LaLiga North America CEO Boris Gartner
on the eight-year agreement LaLiga reached with ESPN to become its English- and Spanish-language home for LaLiga Santander and LaLiga SmartBank, Spain's top two divisions, beginning in August. LaLiga is leaving beIN Sports after nine seasons (and with three years left on its agreement) as its rights holder in what Gartner described as "the most important market for LaLiga outside of Spain." LaLiga's deal with ESPN is reported to be worth $1.4 billion, or $175 million per season.
