I recall attending a presentation at the United Soccer Coaches convention a few years back focused on the variables of successful European national team programs. Included in the presentation was data showing one of the greatest correlating national team success factors was the percent of national team eligible players playing in their domestic professional league. The countries with the highest participation at that time was Italy, France, Germany which happened to be the dominating European countries in World Cup competition at that time. College is not MLS or USL but worth noting if the data still holds true
