Spotlight

Born in England to parents of Jamaican and Irish descent, Kalvin Phillips didn't earn his first call-up to the English national team until last August. To celebrate the call-up, Phillips' manager at Leeds United, Argentina Marcelo Bielsa, gave him a replica jersey from his former club, Newell's Old Boys. Phillips returned the favor, giving Bielsa his jersey when he debuted for England against Denmark.

Phillips, 25. has rapidly developed in an important player for England, dubbed the "Yorkshire Pirlo" for his steadying role as the holding midfielder at Leeds. He has improved under Bielsa and was a key player in its promotion campaign and successful return to the Premier League in 2020-21.

Phillips was probably the best player in England's 1-0 win over Croatia, playing in a more attacking role and setting up Raheem Sterling for the winning goal with a great through ball.
