Peru and Ecuador got their first points in the tournament of 10 teams in two groups from which eight will advance.
2019 Copa America runner-up Peru, which opened with a 4-0 loss to host Peru, rebounded with a 2-1 win over Colombia decided by Yerry Mina's own goal. Venezuela, which opened with a 3-0 loss to Brazil after calling in 15 last-minute replacements for COVID-positive tested players and tied Colombia, 0-0, in its second game, scored its first goals and picked up another point in a 2-2 tie with Ecuador.
Off-field: Chile's barbergate
Chile was fined $15,000 for a violation of Covid-spread prevention protocol after players ordered haircuts from their hotel. The Chilean federation stated it “recognizes the violation of the health bubble of the squad participating at Copa America, with the unauthorized entry of a barber who, despite his negative PCR test, should not have made contact with the players.” Midfielder Arturo Vidal and defender Gary Medel were reported by Chilean media to entering the hotel with an unauthorized person and both posted videos of themselves their hair cut on social media. Chile opened with a 1-1 tie with Argentina and a 1-0 win over Bolivia, and can clinch a knockout round spot with a win on Monday against Uruguay.
Chile coach Martin Lasarte said his players, who remain eligible to compete made “a serious mistake. ... It was an error, a temerity, but that is over now.”
