Yanks Abroad: Konrad completes transfer from Barcelona to Marseille

American teen Konrad de La Fuente has joined French club Marseille from Barcelona.

OM, fifth in Ligue 1 in 2020-21, signed the 19-year-old winger to a four-year contract in a transfer deal estimated at $3.3 million. He is the second summer transfer for Marseille after 24-year-old Brazilian Gerson, signed from Flamengo for an estimated $27.5 million.

Konrad was born in Miami to Haitian parents and moved to Spain when he was young. He was raised in the famed Barca youth system and joined the first team for the 2020-21.

He played in two Champions League matches and one Copa del Rey game last season and scored six goals in 21 league matches for Barcelona B in the Spanish third tier but failed to make his LaLiga debut.

He started for the USA at the 2019 Under-20 World Cup and made his senior national team debut last November in a 0-0 tie with Wales.

The only other American in Ligue 1 is 21-year-old Tim Weah, who plays for champion Lille.
