What They're Saying: Matthew Hoppe

“Gregg and I have a unique relationship. It’s very positive. It’s unlike any other relationship I’ve had with a coach, the way he brings his players together. He has his ways to motivate and build bonds in the team. And it’s gotten us the Nations League trophy and the Gold Cup trophy.”

-- U.S. forward Matthew Hoppe on national team coach Gregg Berhalter whose shaved head he enhanced a photo of with an artistic touch and arranged for it to be plastered on a T-shirt. He kept the T-shirt to himself until the post-game party after the USA won the Gold Cup in Las Vegas, where he wore it under a dark blazer, which he opened when he saw Berhalter. The T-shirt was his way of making amends after voicing his frustration to Berhalter when he was subbed out late in the USA-Qatar semifinal, in which his replacement, Nicholas Gioacchini, set up the winning goal. Hoppe said his emotions got the better of him but there were no hard feelings with Berhalter, who started him in the final. (Washington Post)
